Who Is a Good Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive lens exchange is one of the most versatile vision correction procedures available today, but it is not always the first option patients hear about. There are three distinct groups of patients who benefit most from RLE, and understanding which category you fall into is a great starting point for your consultation. Watch our overview below, then read on for the breakdown.

Group 1: Patients With Cataracts

If you have developed a cataract or are in the early stages of one, refractive lens exchange addresses it directly. We remove the cloudy natural lens at whatever stage it is and replace it with a clear intraocular lens implant. There is no need to wait for a cataract to worsen before acting.

Group 2: Previous LASIK, PRK, or Radial Keratotomy Patients

About a third of our RLE patients fall into this category. These are patients who had LASIK, PRK, or radial keratotomy years ago, enjoyed clear vision without glasses for a period of time, and have since found themselves back in glasses or contacts as their eyes have changed with age. RLE offers a path back to clear, glasses-free vision by addressing the lens rather than returning to the cornea.

Group 3: Patients Growing More Dependent on Glasses With Age

This is our largest group of RLE patients. These are typically patients over 50 who find themselves increasingly dependent on glasses as the eye’s natural lens loses its flexibility. If you are holding reading material at arm’s length, switching between reading glasses and distance glasses throughout the day, or juggling multiple pairs of contacts, your natural lens is likely the limiting factor.

A good rule of thumb: if you are reaching for your glasses more than half the time, it is worth having a conversation about RLE.

While we generally prefer to use LASIK, EVO ICL™, or PRK before the natural lens loses its function, RLE can be performed at virtually any age when it is the right solution. The decision is always based on what is best for your eyes and your lifestyle, not a number on a chart.
