Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL)
At K2 Vision, we believe vision correction should be as unique as you are. That’s why we offer the revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL) by RxSight®—the only intraocular lens (IOL) that can be adjusted after surgery to fine-tune your vision. Whether you’re having cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE), the LAL gives you the chance to preview and personalize your results after the lens is implanted.
With locations that serve Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Olympia, Vancouver, Portland, Tri-Cities, Spokane, Alaska and Scottsdale/Phoenix, K2 Vision makes personalized vision correction accessible.
Led by Dr. Andrew Kopstein—one of North America’s most experienced surgeons for advanced RLE procedures—K2 Vision performs more Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) procedures than any other practice in the U.S. If you’re ready to free yourself from glasses, contacts, readers, and cataracts, you’re in the right place.
What is the Light Adjustable Lens?
The Light Adjustable Lens allows us to refine your vision after surgery—giving you a level of precision and personalization that traditional fixed-power IOLs simply can’t match.1
How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?
Benefits of the LAL
- Customized Vision Correction: Adjust the lens power during recovery for optimal clarity.
- Improved Visual Outcomes: Twice as many LAL patients achieve 20/20 vision compared to standard IOLs.
- Less Reliance on Glasses and Contacts: Many patients no longer need glasses after their final light treatment.
- Quick, Comfortable Adjustments: Light treatments are painless, fast, and done in-office.
- Solution for a variety of vision problems: LAL can help treat presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism 2
- LASIK, PRK, RK Patients: LAL is an especially effective solution for past LASIK, PRK, RK and Retinal Surgery patients.
How is the LAL Customized to You
This is where the Light Adjustable Lens truly delivers on the promise of personalized vision correction. After your initial recovery from cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE), you’ll return to K2 Vision for a series of UV light treatments that fine-tune your lens implant based on your actual visual needs.
How the Adjustment Process Works:
1. Vision Assessment
We check your visual clarity, dilation, and healing status.
2. Light Delivery Device (LDD)
You’ll sit at a specialized machine that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to reshape the LAL inside your eye.
3. Non-Invasive Treatments
Each light adjustment typically takes less than 2 minutes. Most patients spend about an hour at each visit to allow time for dilation and follow-up checks.
4. Series of Adjustments
Patients usually undergo 2 to 4 light treatments, spaced 3–7 days apart, depending on healing and visual outcomes.
5. Final Light Treatment
Once you’ve reached your desired vision, we will perform a final UV light session to lock in your lens shape permanently.
This is the only IOL that gives you the chance to “test drive” your vision and customize it—something no other lens can offer. It’s a major leap forward in personalized eye care and vision correction.
Who is a Candidate for the LAL?
The LAL is an excellent option for:
- Patients with presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism
- People with previous LASIK, PRK, RK or other eye surgeries
- Patients who want the flexibility to personalize their vision.
- Patients who desire the best distance lens on the market
A comprehensive eye exam with one of our experienced ophthalmologists will determine your eligibility.
What if I've had LASIK, PRK, RK or Retina Surgery?
LASIK, PRK and RK patients have had previous work done on their cornea. In order to get a proper measurement of what power lens to implant, you need an accurate measurement of the shape of the cornea.
Due to the nature of the procedure, your cornea shape could change post RLE or Cataract surgery.
With a fixed Lens, this could require additional surgery on the cornea to satisfy your visual needs. With the LAL, we never have to treat the cornea again. All adjustments (patients have to 1 to 3) happen through the ultraviolet treatment of the lens.
We believe the Light Adjustable Lens is the best option for all patients who have had previous eye surgery: LASIK, PRK, RK or Retina Surgery.

Preparing for Surgery with the LAL
Your journey begins with a free, no-pressure consultation where our team takes time to understand your goals and thoroughly assess your eye health.
During your consultation, we’ll:
- Conduct advanced diagnostic imaging of your eyes, including corneal curvature, lens clarity, and ocular surface health
- Evaluate the retina and screen for conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration
- Review your medical history, including any previous refractive surgery (like LASIK or PRK)
- Discuss lifestyle factors such as work, hobbies, screen time, and reading needs
- Talk through all intraocular lens options, including the Light Adjustable Lens, to help you make the most informed choice
If the LAL is right for you, we’ll provide detailed preoperative instructions, including the use of prescribed eye drops, transportation planning, and any adjustments needed to your daily routine.
We’ll also walk you through what to expect on surgery day and during your recovery, answer all your questions, and ensure you feel confident moving forward.
The Light Adjustable Lens Procedure
Whether you’re having cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE), the Light Adjustable Lens procedure at K2 Vision is quick, comfortable, and highly precise. Most surgeries take just 5-6 minutes per eye.
Here’s what to expect:
- Before the procedure: You’ll receive eye drops to numb the eye. You may also be given a mild oral sedative to help you relax.
- During surgery: Your surgeon will make a tiny incision in the cornea, remove your natural lens and insert the LAL. The incision is so small it usually seals itself over night without the need for stitches.
- After surgery: You’ll recover briefly in our office and be sent home with detailed instructions, eye drops, and UV protective glasses. Most patients are back to normal activities the next day.
FAQs About the Light Adjustable Lens
What makes the LAL different from standard IOLs?
The LAL is the only FDA-approved intraocular lens that can be adjusted after surgery. Standard lenses are fixed and can’t respond to how your eyes heal. The LAL gives you more predictable results.
Is it really necessary to wear UV protective glasses?
Yes. Until your final light treatment is completed, the LAL remains responsive to UV light. Wearing UV-blocking glasses during all time spent outside is essential to avoid unintentional lens changes.
Do light treatments hurt?
No. You’ll receive numbing eye drops, and the treatment is very brief. Some patients feel mild pressure, but discomfort is rare.
Will I still need reading glasses?
Many patients enjoy excellent distance and intermediate vision without glasses. Depending on your goals and eye health, some may still benefit from readers for fine print.
Is the LAL right for someone who’s had LASIK or PRK?
Yes. It’s often the preferred lens for patients with a history of refractive surgery because of its ability to fine-tune results postoperatively.
Can the LAL correct astigmatism or nearsightedness?
Yes. The adjustment process allows us to treat astigmatism, myopia, farsightedness, and other refractive errors with more precision than traditional lenses.
Are there risks with the Light Adjustable Lens?
Like any eye surgery, there are risks of infection or inflammation, but these are rare and typically well managed. The biggest factor is following our instructions closely—especially wearing UV glasses and attending all follow-up appointments.
